Jumping
The key to this trick is to do it gradually. Don't expect your pet to jump over your head on the first day that you train him. Here, again, knowledge of the basic commands, in this case the ability to heel, is required. Also, take your dog's size and stature into consideration before teaching him to jump over any obstacle. Obviously, a Dachshund will never be able to clear a five-foot jump, no matter how well trained he is.
Pet Pillow
First, set up a low stick hurdle by placing some vertical sticks with one laid over them horizontally or a pair of pillows with a stick over it on the grass. With your dog on a leash, make the dog heel and have him step over the hurdle as you say, "Up!" or "Over!" Once he steps over the hurdle, command him to sit and praise him lavishly.
Next, stand next to one of the verticals on the hurdle with the horizontal bar clear and encourage the dog to go over, commanding, "Up!" or "Over!" Once he does it, praise him lavishly. Then, using a retractable leash, have the dog sit on one side of the hurdle while you stand on the other. Using the leash to urge him over, give him the "up" or "over" command until he does it, then praise.
Once he does it, move both the dog and yourself farther and farther from the hurdle, with you on one side and the dog on the other, and repeat the trick.
When you are confident the dog can jump without the leash, remove it and command him to jump. How high you train the dog to jump will depend on the dog; some breeds can jump shoulder height. However, training a dog to jump should be done slowly over a period of time, and always keep in mind that every time he lands on his feet, it causes stress on his entire body.
